Karandash Support Spindles are a style of Russian support spindle where a whorl is positioned at the bottom of the shaft with a tip of another timber.

Paul, aka Lair of the Bearded Dragon, wanted a unique look for these Russian type support spindles and landed on a cross between those iconic domes of the St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow and a pencil. In case you were wondering “Karandash” is the word for Pencil in Russian.

Russian type support spindles are fast spinners and excellent for short and very fine fibres, when extra twist is needed.
